This is a photograph of Robert Bartsch, a sailor on the SMS Iltis that served in China, and his family. It was probably taken in Germany in the early 1900s.

Robert Bartsch wears a dark blue other ranks dress jacket ("Affenjacke"- see Other Ranks Naval Uniforms Page) with unidentified specialist insignia on the left sleeve in yellow (or white) metallic thread. He also wears a Prussian pre-1913 long service award on his left breast. Under his jacket he wears a white summer shirt with its blue naval collar worn over the top. His trousers are matching dark blue.

Over his white summer shirt he wears a dark blue other ranks dress jacket ("Affenjacke") with specialist insignia on the left sleeve in yellow (or white) metallic thread.

Please contact me here if you have other photographs of the German colonies or the soldiers and sailors that served there. I am especially keen to hear from people with family photograph collections and am always happy to try to assist in identifying uniforms, units, places and dates for family history research.
